Ukraine is the largest country in Eastern Europe except for Russia. It is known for its ongoing tensions with its vast neighbor in the east, a large-scale nuclear event, and its rich history that first established it at the core of the eastern Slavic kingdom. Shevchenko, Klitschko brothers, Borsch, girls, Chernobyl, all this ordinary man will tell you about Ukraine. But there are many interesting facts about this country, which no one doubts.
Fact 1 - Russia excluded, Ukraine is the continent largest county in 603,628 square kilometers, stretching from Russia in the east to Poland in the west, and sandwiched between the Black Sea in the south and the partner of the former Soviet state of Belarus in the north. France is next in 551,695 square kilometers.
Fact 2 - Data from the World Health Organization - WHO places Ukraine in sixth place for alcohol consumption, with a whopping 13.9 liters per capita per year. Only Belarus, which topped the chart, Moldova, Lithuania, Russia, and Romania, consume more.
Fact 3 - Ukraine is not all about emetics. Next to the main train station in the country capital Kyiv, McDonald is claimed to be the third busiest city in the world.
Fact 4 - The main street of Kyiv, Khreshchatyk Street, is often referred to as the shortest and widest main drag in the world. Only 1.2 km long but remarkably broad, the road, which was destroyed in World War II, is a focal point of the capital.
Fact 5 - The university also claims to be the home of the first gas lamp. Invented by a local pharmacist in a store called the Golden Star, today, this feat is remembered by a cafe called Gasova Lumpa found in the same building.
