Thappad is one movie which has left many people uncomfortable. According to film critics, this is one movie which is a tight slap on those who believe that everything is fine in a marriage. This is a tight slap right in the face of misogyny. It is one movie which has compelled the audience to introspect about our patriarchy.
Thappar is a different movie. It does not have several turns and twists like any other Bollywood movies. The movie is just a lesson, it s a tight slap which we already saw in the trailer. The movie is about the dramatic journey of a heroine and how it has an impact on everyone who is a part of her life. Taapsee Pannu does complete justice to her role and can be seen totally immersed in her character. She looks stunningly beautiful in the movie. The movie nicely depicts her smooth transition. It from a smiling self-subordination to self-awareness.
Ratna Pathak Shah in the role of Amu s mother evolves beautifully through the story. The movie has a talented supporting cast with Tanvi Azmi, Geetika Vidya and Kumud Mishra. Geetika in her role as the housemaid depicts the dismal life of such women. However, Ankur Rathee in the role of Amu s brother is one weak character in the chain. Dia Mirza is a pleasant surprise in the movie. Here she is no longer just a presence but has a strong role as sweet and supportive neighbor.
Pavail Gulati has a critical role to play as the problematic husband. He has to show his arrogance. He is a character who shows sympathy towards the household help, but doesn t restrain in ordering is wife just as he would order his junior at work. He is shown to be one character who knows how to use his male privilege. Gulati is a fine actor who does complete justice to the role he is provided.
The movie successfully shows the different shades of men. There is the haughty hero to another likable person who turns equally possessive for his daughter. The movie has a strong script which is quite engaging. There are many lines where mothers speak about the mistreatment from spouses and how they accept it without any reluctance. It is something that they can easily pass on to their daughters.
This is one of the many films which will be remembered by many in the next few years.
