Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar is a brave story of a nineteen- year old girl s grit and indomitable spirit. Atika Chohan and Meghna Gulzar wrote the story based on a true incident of an acid attack survivor, Laxmi. The film was produced by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar jointly in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. The film was released in India on the second week of January 2020.
The Government of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allowed free exhibition of the film and gained popularity as well as positive reviews from the audience. Apart from Deepika Vikrant Massey, Vishal Dahiya, Madhurjeet Sarghi and Ankit Bisht also acted in this film. Deepika played the main role of Malti.
The story of Malti is like that one day in April 2005 Malti was attacked with acid in a busy street of Delhi by one of her family friend, Bashir Shaikh or Babbu. Malti s brother s wife helped Bashir in this work. Bashir was arrested by the police. In the meantime, Malti underwent a series of surgeries to reshape her severely damaged face. Malti s parents worked as domestic help in Shiraz s house.
She helped financially in Malti s treatment and hired Archana as Malti s lawyer. Malti wanted to become a singer but her dream became shattered in this event. Instead, she started working with an NGO. The support from her family decreased with her father s death and her brother became severely ill. But, throughout her taxing journey, Malti s lawyer stood by her. Apart from the lawyer, her support came from her boyfriend Amol who employs her in the NGO.
Deepika Padukone, who played the central character of the film did a brilliant performance. Her way of portraying Malti was so deep that it will move you to tears while watching the film. Both Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi did an excellent performance.
The movie is a brave attempt to stand by the side of acid attack survivors. Chhapaak is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful handling of a heinous crime against women. The movie tells the story of Malti s struggle and triumphs over every odds of her life. The movie also gives you the statistics of acid attacks in the country every year. Chhapaak is an inspirational film to all acid attack survivors, not only of our country but also of other countries.
It gives them the strength to fight against the crime.
