In the past few years, there has been a huge change in the pattern and way of reading books. Researches indicate a change in the taste and preferences of readers. Before delving further into the topic we need to know what is an Ebook? The Ebook can be defined as the virtual counterpart of a physical book. It can also be defined as the digital version of a printed book, which can be read in devices like computers, smartphones and Ebook readers.

The concept of Ebook came from the fact that computers should not only be used for computing purposes, they should also be used to store something and retrieve it on need. Printed books occupy a lot of space and can also get damaged upon which all the information stored in it will be lost forever. Keeping this fact in mind, the concept of Ebook was developed. The era of digital books started with a copy of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Then there came Project Gutenberg, the largest Ebook library or archive. Today more than 1000,000 texts are available in Ebook format.

Due to the course of time, Ebook became available in many formats like Mobi, pdf and epub. The major difference between these formats were their size and the platforms which they support. Along with formats and platforms, various Ebook sellers entered the market offering digital copies of old and rare books. Then there were publishers who gave a golden opportunity to budding writers to publish their own book in digital format. This process created new writers of fiction and non fiction books. Catalogues were made available over the internet and Ebooks circulated over to the public. Several Ebook readers like Kobo, Amazon Kindle, Nook entered into the market to cater to the needs of the readers.

The first genre that caught people s fancy was that of Romance. These books were used as a source of guilty pleasure and besides the fact that they could be read at the privacy of one s home without letting anyone know, they were also easily available. After that, various other genres like horror, comedy and adventure became popular. Next, comics entered the Ebook market and rose to the top ranks of popularity within a very short time.

The fact that digital books can be carried and read anywhere aided to its popularity. They can fit into pockets and can be read well enough without an external source of light. Soon various sites emerged into the market offering a huge array of Ebooks that can be purchased or even downloaded for free. The sale of Ebooks rocketed in Japan.

Nowadays authors who want to publish Ebooks can do so in various file formats. There have been endless debates regarding the best format but more or less equal popularity is gained by all the formats. A CD can hold approximately 500 Ebooks. Royalties can be earned by the author throughout a lifetime as Ebooks can be produced digitally and would never run out of print.

In the end, it can be said that Ebooks has revolutionized the way of reading books all over the world and it has a bright future ahead.
