When we open a new online store, the first problem we have to face is that we lack a name on the Internet (unless we are a store with previous experience in traditional stores). This means that we have no links from other websites to ours; no one has commented on our store, we do not appear in website directories, etc. In short, clients will hardly arrive if we do nothing to change the situation of our site.

The starting point in this situation is to prepare an online attack plan: we will make a list of the actions we can take to promote our online store and start working on our marketing. The first step will be to include our online store in directories, both generalists and popular search engines, as well as the most specialized in online stores. To do this, we will search the Internet for the directories most consulted by online shoppers and include our store in their listings. Most are free, and customers will be able to reach our store from many different pages.

Another essential step, which we are going to focus on, is to use online advertising. The best-known system for including ads on the Internet is perhaps Google Adwords, but we can find out if someone else, perhaps local, convinces us more or is cheaper. Including our ads in Adwords is how we can appear on the first page of Google results when a potential client searches for a site to buy the product that we sell.

The three links that appear in a yellow background and the ones that appear to the right are ads from sites that have included among their keywords those that the user has searched for. We must think under what search we want our potential customers to find us and fight to appear among the top positions, which in the case of Google, is decided through an auction of the ads. We will set a maximum price for each keyword and ad, which is what we would be willing to pay as a cap, and if our bet is greater than that of other interested parties, our ad will come out as we see in the example.

Keep in mind that, using these advertising systems, we only pay when someone clicks on our link and arrives at our website, so the actual cost depends on what we want, and we can invest in the auction and the full cap of expense per day that we introduce. You can also use other types of advertising, such as banners on other websites, which we will talk about in another post.

The system to use these advertising managers is usually very simple: you have to include one or more ads on their platforms and the distributors (for example, Adwords), ensure that your ad appears in the Google search results (such as the example that we have just seen) or on web pages and blogs whose content talks about topics similar to those related to our online store.

It is very important, both to prepare our website and to promote it through these techniques, having our list of keywords very clear, when requesting online advertising campaigns, will be very helpful.
